iPhone 3.0 New Software
Apple plans to hold a media briefing March 17 to introduce version 3.0 of its iPhone software along with the new SDK., an event that developers hope will bring long-promised features to the iPhone.Among the most desired features missing from the iPhone is the ability to copy and paste data between iPhone applications .
- Spotlight Search–Search for apps, emails, notes, messages, etc, in a new unified search bar on the iPhone’s home screen. Tap any item to launch in a related app.
- Copy, Cut, and Paste–The long awaited feature that will let you copy and paste text across different apps. Personally, not a big deal, but should have been added a long time ago.
- MMS Messaging–Now you can text message not only pictures, but voice memos as well. First-gen iPhone owners are out of luck though, it will only work on the iPhone 3G and newer iPhones.
- Notifications–Apple is remaining stubborn about background processes draining batteries, so it’s forcing the processes into the cloud and notifying the user to open an app when, say, a instant message arrives or there’s a news alert.
- In-App Transactions–You can now buy things within apps, such as new game levels or new books for book readers. Transactions are still done through iTunes using your ID and password.
- Apps Interact with Third-Party Hardware–This may sneakily be the most powerful feature added. Application developers can write apps that interact with hardware attached to the iPhone, like iPod docks, blood testers, etc. The possibilities are endless (assuming that Apple lets a wide range of hardware connect).
- Turn-by-Turn Directions–iPhone will now be a solid GPS navigation device. Can someone release a voice navigation app now, please?
- Email Multiple Pictures in a Single Email–Again, should have been in a long time ago.
- Landscape Typing in More Apps–It’s as if the voices of a thousand landscape typing apps cried out in terror at once and were suddenly silenced.
- Peer-to-Peer Connections–Connect to other iPhones and iPods using Bluetooth. Pretty cool, as you will no longer need a WiFi network to connect to another iPhone to play games, just another iPhone/iPod.
